There have been a number of stories on TV about a friend of mine who was murdered and I need to capture the video and preserve it in digital format. I know how to edit video, I know how to rip video from a DVD or BluRay, but I can't figure out any way to get the video off my DVR and onto a disc or my computer. You can buy a tv-tuner device to record it. Connect the DVR to the tv tuner device (which will be attached to your computer) via the component cables. Then you'll have to manually play the recording on the DVR and manually start/stop the recording on the computer.This article is from 5 years ago but it offers an explanation of what I'm talking about - Note that the article talks about 'Total Media Extreme' but Hauppauge products now use WinTV 8 for recording. The older Hauppuage products have component in (ex. HD PVR) while the newer ones don't (HDMI input only) but they provide you with connector cables to cross over Component - HDMI.
