Squid girl and Umaru-chan!? It's too good to be wrong! All of the similarities are there: the cuteness, the chibi, and like the guy above me, the annoyed caretaker.

ColloquialDuckling97 says

I agree, their designs are based on animals, they have chibi forms, they annoy at least one person around them while also having a share of admirers and challengers, and suprisingly, squid girl is also somewhat of an otaku too.

Toothygrin says

Himouto Umaru-chan and squidgirl are pretty much the same anime with a few differences in flavor. Mostly because squidgirl is more fish based, and far more outside of reality. Squid girl is a little less lazy then Umaru, But with all the Ecchi stuff that has flooded the anime scene lately they are a nice island in a sea of boobs. Not that boobs are a bad thing but when the anime sells it'self on nothing past sex it gets rather dull pretty quick. These shows don't do that. They are more Oh my god that is so freakin cute I think I gotz daiahbeetis. And use that to comedic effect. They have a lot more in common then that just watch the intros of both of them and you will see that.

Both characters are slovenly nerds.

Both characters have a squeaky clean personas. (Even if one gave up on it)

Both shows are hilarious as all Hell.

You like one, you'll like the other.

FullmetalDragon says

Both series are about a girl who pretends to be perfect, but is actually an extremely selfish and lazy otaku. Both are hilarious, although Himouto is completely based in reality while Gabriel Dropout features angels and demons. Both are very good and definitley worth watching.

DDoyeonii says

They are both pretty moe, and if you like one, you would definitely like the other(just like how I did).

Both anime involve an otaku girl who stays home all of the time, playing video games, watching anime and snacking. Both girls do not have many friends, and actually cherish the time they have with the little friends they do have; both main characters have a close relationship with their brother. The main character in Watamote is socially awkward and doesn't really have friends. In Himouto, it's not the main character, but another character who is socially awkward and doesn't really have friends. Nor does she know how to make them, she also happens to freak people out and scare them, due to her awkwardness.

QueenViper2003 says

The main characters are fangirls. The main characters both rely on their brother. The main difference between the two is that Umaru is popular and hides her otaku side, yet Tomoko only has her brother and old friend and hadn't hidden her otaku side. I enjoyed both shows and would re-watch them both, because of the comedy and relatability.
